About the International Driving Permit

To drive in Greece as a U.S. citizen, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is not strictly required if your U.S. driver’s license is in English. However, it is recommended to have one in case you need it for clarity with local authorities, especially if you plan to rent a car.

Here’s how you can get an IDP to drive to Greece:

Steps to Obtain an IDP in the U.S. for Travel to Greece:

  1. Eligibility: You must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid U.S. driver’s license. The IDP is only a translation of your existing license and does not replace it.

  2. Where to Get an IDP: You can apply for an IDP through the following authorized agencies in the U.S.:

    • American Automobile Association (AAA)
    • American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA)
  3. Documents Needed:

    • A valid U.S. driver’s license (must be in English).
    • A passport-sized photo (typically two).
    • A completed application form (available online or at the office).
    • Payment: There is usually a fee of around $20.
  4. Application Process:

    • In Person: You can apply in person at a AAA or AATA office. If you go to AAA, they typically issue the IDP on the spot.
    • By Mail: You can also apply by mail to AAA or AATA. In this case, it may take 10-15 business days to process and receive your IDP.
    • Online: Some services, like AAA, may allow you to apply online and receive your IDP by mail. Check their website for specific instructions.
  5. Validity: The IDP is valid for one year or until your U.S. driver’s license expires, whichever comes first.

Why You Might Want an IDP for Greece:

  • While Greece does not require an IDP if you have a valid U.S. driver’s license in English, it can be very helpful in case of any issues with local law enforcement or when renting a car, as it translates your driver’s license into multiple languages.
